FAT cops are the target of a police forceOs new health and fitness drive.

Lothian and Borders want to banish the image of the overweight policeman as portrayed in TV shows such as The Fast Show and cartoon characters such as Oor WullieOs PC Murdoch.

They have introduced low-calorie meals in the staff canteen and are offering discounted gym memberships.

Deputy chief constable Tom Wood has already shown the way by shedding more than two stone.

The initiative, believed to be the first of its kind by a UK police force, was set up after it was revealed an alarming number of officers had to quit early because of ill-health.

Wood said there was no point in police officers having access to the latest crime-fighting equipment if they were to unfit to use it.

He added: OPolicing is now a very different business in terms of physical exertion and stress and people have to be equipped to carry it out in every way.O
