THE STATE OF OUR NATIONAL PROGRAMS.

The response to building the infrastructure has been well received.

Espousing the benefits of parks and recreation is as easy as saying, "youth, health, and the environment." During the past year, the newly developed National Recreation and Park Association's office on national programs has been fielding calls from members, corporations, and allied organizations about the exciting national agenda that NRPA NRPA National Recreation and Park Association
NRPA Natural Resources Protective Association (Staten Island, NY)
NRPA Niagara Regional Police Association (Canada)
NRPA National Rifle and Pistol Association
has been cultivating around youth, health, and the environment. The motto for effectively supporting the work of park and recreation agencies in all settings nationwide is "Partnerships for the Future." Crafting relationships with allied organizations, corporations, and NRPA members to advance the Benefits-based focus on youth development, health throughout the life span, and environmental stewardship The integration and application of environmental values into the military mission in order to sustain readiness, improve quality of life, strengthen civil relations, and preserve valuable natural resources.  is essential for public visibility and advocacy. NRPA national program resources are designed with the professional delivery system in mind and increasingly provide a consumer strategy to enlist en·list

the involvement of citizens to support programs, facilities, and new levels of service.

The response to building NRPA's national program infrastructure has been well received by members and potential partners. More than 1,200 agencies participated in NRPA-delivered programs during 1999. Each program partnership is pilot-tested in the field to determine ultimate value to NRPA's national audience; in some cases, the programs haven't passed muster TO MUSTER, mar. law. By this term is understood to collect together and exhibit soldiers and their arms; it also signifies to employ recruits and put their names down in a book to enroll them. . The commitment to support NRPA member agencies and affiliates with quality resources has extended to provide financial support for program and facility development. During 1999, NRPA was able to convey more than $170,000 in direct grants for research and program development.

Goals for 2000 include launching major initiatives that create national visibility and relevance for parks and recreation at the local level. Program-based partnerships are crucial to building credibility that will foster corporate interest in broader visibility goals, but individual programs will remain a cornerstone of focus for the national programs office. While sports and fitness have been central to NRPA's national program profile, efforts are being made to include cultural arts, historical preservation, community building strategies, and environmental stewardship to new opportunities provided through NRPA partners. Ultimately the goal is not simply to acquire new resources and develop more and more programs, but to add value to the profession's work in a way that increases public visibility for parks and recreation while reinforcing all public advocacy efforts.

It's a call to action for all NRPA member agencies to take advantage of a number of opportunities designed with our profession's collective well-being in mind. NRPA is looking for Looking for

departments to serve as pilot sites for emerging programs and new departments interested in benefiting from a variety of national resources. The Association is also looking for organizational contacts with national corporations that may be interested in working with parks and recreation nationwide. Already, members such as Jodi Adams (Springfield, Mo.), Dee Craig (Portland, Ore.), and the Tennessee Recreation and Park Association have successfully introduced NRPA staff to potential national partners.

For all the new or "tried and true" programs listed herein, consider joining Team NRPA to build improved public visibility and enhanced program services. To receive activation information, pick any or all of the programs that fit the needs and interests of your clientele by completing the interest form and faxing it back to NRPA at (703) 729-4753. A full description of all NRPA national programs can be found at www.ActivePARKS.org in the Programs & Partners section after October 20, 1999.

ActivePARKS.org

Since May, NRPA has been working with a new partner, ActiveUSA.com, to create a landmark Internet portal to promote active lifestyles. Already established on the World Wide Web with more than 30,000 annual activity and event listings, ActiveUSA.com recognized the incredible gap that existed between wanting to become active and knowing where, when, and how to pursue leisure activities. "Partnering with NRPA creates a solid foundation for building this extraordinary Internet portal because it will guide the public to the places that provide the widest range of healthy lifestyle opportunities," said Jim Woodman, president of ActiveUSA.com. This five-year agreement will be a catalyst for NRPA's emerging citizen agenda, build a common data model for the profession, and endeavor to unify 1.  the park and recreation community through technology. The Web site, ActivePARKS.org, will be launched at the NRPA Congress & Exposition in Nashville, Tenn., where delegates will have an opportunity to tour the site at the ActivePARKS.org Cyber Cafe.

The cornerstone of ActivePARKS.org is an Active Search database of local park and recreation facilities. Local departments will be able to provide basic profile data on facilities through online registration, e-mail, or hard copy. This nationwide inventory of park and recreation facilities will provide the public with specific information about how to become active. The building blocks of the Active Search segment will also include the capability for posting special events, activities, and programs offered by participating agencies. The Internet portal will provide online transactions for departments interested in providing real-time registrations for customers.

A common data model for these transactions, currently being designed and tested in a number of park and recreation settings, will be available soon after the publication of this article. The Active Search segment will provide participants the opportunity to profile their leisure interests in order to receive e-mail when events and activities of their choice are posted for their community, state, or region. These Internet solutions will be available at no fee to park and recreation agencies participating in the ActivePARKS.org initiative.

Additional segments of the new Internet See Web 2.0 and Internet2.  presence will include Active Lifestyles, Programs & Partners, and NRPA. org. Active Lifestyles will serve as an interactive resource for consumers interested in active and healthy lifestyles. The information will articulate the benefits of parks and recreation while providing personal tips and information about healthy lifestyles options. Volunteerism vol·un·teer·ism

Active Living/Healthy Lifestyles[TM]

When BENGAY teamed up with NRPA in 1997 to support the launch of the Active Living/Healthy Lifestyles[TM] health and wellness initiative, it could not have predicted the positive level of response received by the field.

On behalf of BENGAY, we extend our sincere thanks to all the park and recreation agencies for their continued support of the Active Living/Healthy Lifestyles[TM] program. Today, more than 300 agencies are actively involved in promoting Active Living/Healthy Lifestyles[TM] -- from Army and Navy bases to small towns to large cities, the program's positive message of health and fitness at any level is being communicated to audiences of all ages.

In 1999, NRPA and BENGAY selected 10 agencies to receive $1,000 grants, which will be used to further promote the Active Living/Healthy Lifestyles[TM] message. We are proud to recognize these agencies.
