THE SPA EXPERIENCE IS NO LONGER JUST A WOMAN'S WORLD ... MAN-ICURE, ANYONE?

There was a time when the spa was a woman's escape -- when seaweed wraps and deep-pore cleansing facials were a ladies-only repertoire not all that different from a trip to the beauty parlor or a jaunt to the nail salon A nail salon is a beauty services establishment that offers nail care services such as manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements primarily. Often, nail salons also offer skin care services. There are approximately 38,000 nail salons in the U.S. .

Not anymore: Today's man manicures, too. "The spa experience is really not seen as a frou-frou place of pampering anymore," said Lynne McNees, president of the International Spa Association. "It's seen as a place to go to take care of yourself and to really focus on a healthier lifestyle."

face is no longer considered "healthy," and copious amounts of chest hair lost mass appeal around, say, 1979, it's no wonder more and more men are flocking to spas and salons for facials and "manscaping" (slang for body-hair trimming).

"If the man is going to expect the woman to look good, why shouldn't the woman expect the man to look good?" asked Vic Sosikian, owner of the Mark Matthew Fine Gentlemen's Grooming Club in Studio City, an upscale barber shop that offers massage, facials and other spa services for men. "Men's grooming is something that we should have been doing all along."

Sosikian decorated his windowless Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S.  salon with dark wood panels, brown leather chairs and flat-screen TVs to give the space a country-club feel.

"Nobody's walking by pointing, seeing a guy getting a pedicure," Sosikian said.

But since men-only spas are still the exception, many facilities that have long been popular with women are creating separate menus to appeal to a man's sensibilities and to quell any potential spa timidity.

At Nitespa in Venice, men can opt for a "MAN-icure," with an optional hand massage and paraffin dip.

Similarly, Eos Spa in Sherman Oaks offers the "Alpha Male Facial," a deep-cleansing facial that addresses razor irritation and ingrown hairs, and the "Hand 'Em Over" manicure that promises "the well-groomed look of a Wall Street broker."

"I think a lot of men are intimidated by spas because they think they're really girly girl·y

," said Eos Spa manager Nicole Nixon, who said about 20 percent of her clients are men. "Marketing specifically toward him brings in a lot more men because it creates a niche."

Some spas even offer men's below-the-belt waxing, an arguable final frontier when it comes to making the men's spa experience on par with its female-oriented counterpart.

"We do what men demand," Sosikian said, adding that the more "complicated" waxing can cost upward of more than; above.

Honestly? Not many.
