THE SAGE GROUP Reports That Approximately 760,000 Revascularization Procedures Performed to Treat Peripheral Arterial Disease Are Potential Candidates for Perioperative Oral Antiplatelet Therapy.

ATLANTA -- THE SAGE GROUP recently published three new reports, analyzing the Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) interventional market based on specific devices or therapies. PAD procedures include revascularization with surgery or endovascular devices, as well as amputation amputation (ăm'pyətā`shən), removal of all or part of a limb or other body part. Although amputation has been practiced for centuries, the development of sophisticated techniques for treatment and prevention of infection has greatly .

According to Mary L. Yost, President of THE SAGE GROUP, "PAD revascularization procedures represent a sizeable and rapidly growing market opportunity for perioperative perioperative /peri·op·er·a·tive/ (-op´er-ah-tiv) pertaining to the period extending from the time of hospitalization for surgery to the time of discharge.

per·i·op·er·a·tive
adj.
oral antiplatelet therapy. Patients undergoing peripheral bypass or angioplasty procedures are at high risk for vascular occlusions. Antiplatelet therapy has been shown to reduce this risk.

"In 2005 we estimate that over 940,000 interventional procedures were employed to treat PAD. Of these we conclude that almost 602,000 endovascular procedures (angioplasty, atherectomy and primary stenting) and over 165,000 surgical procedures could be candidates for perioperative oral antiplatelets," Yost stated.

"In addition to the perioperative market, oral antiplatelets should also be employed to reduce PAD patients' risk of heart attack, stroke and death from other vascular causes," she continued. "Although all PAD patients should be receiving risk factor modification therapies such as antiplatelets, antilipids and antihypertensives for those with hypertension, only 30% to 65% are actually treated," observed Ms. Yost.

Oral antiplatelets currently approved for sale in the United States include aspirin, Ticlid (ticlopidine-Roche), Aggrenox (dipyridamole dipyridamole /di·py·rid·a·mole/ (di?pi-rid´ah-mol) a platelet inhibitor and coronary vasodilator used to prevent thromboembolism associated with mechanical heart valves, to treat transient ischemic attacks, and as an adjunct in  and aspirin-Boehringer Ingelheim) and Plavix (clopidogrel-Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi Aventis).

New oral antiplatelets that are being investigated include prasugrel (Daiichi Sankyo Co. and Eli Lilly), TRA-SCH 530348 (Schering-Plough), AZD AZD Alpha Xi Delta sorority
AZD Ambiguity Zone Detection (iterative decoder)
6140 (AstraZeneca), terutroban (Servier) and E 5555 (Eisai Co.).

About Peripheral Arterial Disease

PAD, also known as Peripheral Vascular Disease Peripheral Vascular Disease Definition

Peripheral vascular disease is a narrowing of blood vessels that restricts blood flow. It mostly occurs in the legs, but is sometimes seen in the arms.

) or Peripheral Arterial Occlusive occlusive /oc·clu·sive/ (o-kloo´siv) pertaining to or causing occlusion.

oc·clu·sive
adj.
1. Occluding or tending to occlude.

Disease (PAOD PAOD Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease ), is characterized by a reduction of blood flow to the lower limbs due to atherosclerosis, commonly called hardening of the arteries hardening of the arteries: see arteriosclerosis. . Atherosclerosis is a disease in which the walls of the arteries thicken and harden as a result of the build-up of fatty deposits (plaque) on their inner lining.

According to THE SAGE GROUP, over 16 million U.S. citizens have PAD. Reflecting the ageing population and the epidemic of diabetes, by 2020 over 22 million people are forecast to have PAD.

Peripheral Arterial Disease Interventional Market Analysis Based on Treatment with Perioperative Oral Antiplatelet Therapy

Employing ICD-9 data, this report analyzes the current PAD interventional market based on potential treatment with perioperative oral antiplatelets. THE SAGE GROUP'S PAD Projections Model is employed to forecast endovascular and surgical procedures through 2020.

Angioplasty/atherectomy, primary stent procedures and total endovascular procedures are analyzed by vascular territory in the aortoiliac, femoropopliteal, and tibioperoneal regions and projected through 2020. Femoropopliteal and tibioperoneal forecasts for angioplasty/atherectomy and stenting are based on two assumptions regarding the future role of infrainguinal primary stenting. The optimistic case assumes primary stents gain share, while the pessimistic case assumes that primary stents decline.
