THE ROLLER DERBY CHRONICLES RESURRECTS AMERICAN SPORT.

The Roller Derby Chronicles, a three-disc DVD retrospective of the golden years of Roller Derby, is set to blaze its way to DVD on November 10th from Video Service Corp. The limited edition is a guaranteed collector's item, featuring a pop-up of an actual Roller Derby Track on the front cover, two documentaries and over seven hours of rarely-seen footage featuring game legends in vintage and modern video. The U.S. and Canadian suggested retail price is $59.98.

The Roller Derby Chronicles set is anchored by the brand new hour-long documentary Rolling Thunder. The documentary takes viewers on a nostalgic journey that begins in the early days of television, through the halcyon days in the early 1960s, culminating in the great skating seasons of the 1970s. The film includes interviews with the stars of Roller Derby and examines the history of the sport, highlighting the most prominent skaters with rare action clips, including Mike Gammon, Charlie O'Connell and Gwen "Skinny Mini" Miller. The surviving stars interviewed skated from the early 1950s through the end of the 1970s. It is framed by coverage of the resurgence of the San Francisco Bay Bombers at the storied Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, which was the home arena and broadcast center in the glory days of the Derby.

The box set also features the DVD debut of Derby, an award-winning documentary created in 1971 by legendary promoter Jerry Seltzer (whose father Leo Seltzer was the creator and owner of the original Roller Derby). Peek inside the workings of Roller Derby and the business around it. Scenes from Derby offer a throwback look into a time when money wasn't the only thing keeping athletes in the arenas, presenting greats like Charlie O'Connell, Lydia Clay and more.

The final two discs of The Roller Derby Chronicles are devoted to over seven hours of rare footage of partial games spanning from 1952 to the Derby's reunion season in 1977. Legendary teams such as the San Francisco Bay Bombers, The Canadian All-Stars and the Jersey Jolters battle it out in famous venues including San Francisco's Kezar Pavilion and Kingston's Cow Palace.

HISTORY OF ROLLER DERBY

The term Roller Derby was heard in varying forms as early as 1922. The sport started as a modified endurance competition at the Chicago Coliseum in the early 30s, featuring one man and one woman roller skating on a banked track in a race from one coast to the other. The game progressed as an appealing aesthetic form of entertainment, combining elements of physical endurance with theatrical showmanship and exaggerated costumes.

With Drew Barrymore's soon-to-be released directorial debut of her film WHIP IT, Roller Derby is seeing a modern day resurgence in commercial appeal worldwide. Although born in America, the 80 year-old contact sport of Roller Derby has proven to be an international phenomenon, spreading beyond its roots into leagues based in Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and the UK.
