HISTORY OF ROLLER DERBY

The term Roller Derby was heard in varying forms as early as 1922. The sport started as a modified endurance competition at the Chicago Coliseum in the early 30s, featuring one man and one woman roller skating on a banked track in a race from one coast to the other. The game progressed as an appealing aesthetic form of entertainment, combining elements of physical endurance with theatrical showmanship and exaggerated costumes.

With Drew Barrymore's soon-to-be released directorial debut of her film WHIP IT, Roller Derby is seeing a modern day resurgence in commercial appeal worldwide. Although born in America, the 80 year-old contact sport of Roller Derby has proven to be an international phenomenon, spreading beyond its roots into leagues based in Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia.
