 NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD; FIRST HOTEL COMPANY TO RECEIVE HONOR
 CLEVELAND, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company was today named a winner of the 1992 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, making it the first hotel company in the history of the award to win this coveted honor.
 "This award is a tribute to the 11,500 ladies and gentlemen in our hotels and resorts who are committed to The Ritz-Carlton goal of providing 100 percent guest satisfaction," said Horst Schulze, president and chief operating officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. "I wish I had 10 minutes to spend with everyone in this company to thank them today."

 The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award was established by Congress in 1987 to promote awareness of quality management, to recognize quality management achievements of U.S. companies and to publicize successful quality management strategies.
 The award was named after the late Secretary of Commerce, Malcolm Baldrige, who was an early proponent of the principles of Total Quality Management in the workplace.
 Two companies may win the award annually in each of three categories: manufacturing, service and small business. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed and manages the award program in conjunction with the private sector.
 President Bush will present the award to the five 1992 winners at a ceremony in the White House.
 The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, named "Best Hotel Chain in the United States" by the prestigious Zagat Travel Survey, is headquartered in Atlanta, and operates 25 hotels worldwide, 23 in the United States and two in Australia. Hotels are scheduled to open this year in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii, and Aspen, Colo. Future openings include hotels in Hong Kong, Barcelona and Cancun.
