THE PROGRESS OF NATIONS 2000. The United Nations Children's Fund United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), an affiliated agency of the United Nations. It was established in 1946 as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.  (UNICEF UNICEF (y`nĭsĕf'), the United Nations Children's Fund, an affiliated agency of the United Nations. ). This report chronicles the progress that developing countries have made in achieving the goals set forth by the 1990 World Summit for Children. Essays, photos, and statistical arrays chart the progress made in four areas: the impact of HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome , early childhood care, immunization immunization: see immunity; vaccination. , and protecting children from exploitation and neglect.

The results are encouraging when nations invest in children's well-being and protect their rights. Much still needs to be done, however, and this publication portrays the effects of poverty, gender discrimination, debt, wars, and inadequate commitment to or unequal social progress towards the realization of the rights and potentials of all children.
