THE PEAK TECHNOLOGIES GROUP, INC. REPORTS RECORD SALES AND A 67 PERCENT INCREASE IN EARNINGS PER SHARE FOR SECOND QUARTER

-- Acquires Regional Bar Code Integrator in New England --
NEW YORK, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The Peak Technologies Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: PEAK) today reported sales of $24 million in the second quarter of this year compared to $22 million a year ago. The results reflect increased unit sales as well as the contribution from the business of Group Three Electronics acquired during the period. Net income rose more than 200 percent to $515,000 or $.10 per share versus $169,000 or $0.06 per share in 1992. Six month sales totaled $43.3 million, a $4.6 million improvement over the $38.7 million recorded last year. Net income was $420,000 compared to $274,000 last year. For the six months, there are 5.4 million shares outstanding this year compared to 2.9 million in 1992. Consequently, the company recorded $0.08 per share for the sixth months of 1993 versus $0.10 last year.
Commenting on this performance, Nicholas Toms, chairman and CEO stated, "We have gathered back a great deal of the momentum lost during the first quarter. Our bar code business in particular has experienced a continuation of the solid growth reported in the first quarter. SG&A expense as a percent of sales was 23.0 percent for the quarter including operating expenses relating to the Group Three business compared to 21.6 percent a year ago. However, SG&A was reduced substantially from the 26.6 percent rate of the first quarter of this year in which we experienced a loss principally due to the cancellation of two large orders at the end of the quarter. We are happy to say one of these orders has been re-instated and we expect to commence shipment of this order during the third quarter. Our Group Three business on the West Coast is performing well."
Mr. Toms continued, "Today, we also closed the acquisition of Concord Technologies, Inc., a well established, New England based regional value added distributor and integrator of bar code systems and equipment. The Concord focus on higher margin wireless applications supplements Peak's broad distribution capability in New England. Primary product lines for Concord include Symbol, UBI, Norand and a full line of consumables, all of which are Peak product lines."
The Peak Technologies Group, Inc., is a full service value added distributor and systems integrator of bar code based data collection systems; mass storage systems; information systems printing equipment; and related supplies. Peak markets the products of more than 50 manufacturers.
