Some 20,000 anxious crooners began standing in line at 3 a.m. Tuesday at the Rose Bowl with dreams of landing on ``American Idol American Idol is an annual American televised singing competition, which began its first season on June 11, 2002. Part of the Idol franchise, it originated from the British reality program Pop Idol. ,'' the country's biggest show, and becoming a star. The audition marked the first of seven over the next month for next year's edition of the Fox TV talent contest.

``You need a lot of patience for this,'' said Francesca Lucioni, 23, of Pasadena, who planned to sing something from ``The Little Mermaid'' when her turn came. ``But everyone's here for the same thing, so we're all keeping it positive. Being here is something to remember.''

``You make friends here since you're sharing the experience,'' said Tiffany Zavala, 16, of Sylmar, who had already spent four hours in the pre- dawn darkness waiting to sing ``Impossible,'' the Christina Aguilera

Patrick Lynn, coordinating producer of ``Idol,'' promised that each and every person holding a ticket for the audition would be heard. The star- making show was the top ratings grabber last season when Taylor Hicks Taylore Reuben Hicks (born October 7, 1976) is an American singer-songwriter. Hicks got his start as a professional musician in his late teens and performed around the Southeastern United States for well over the span of a decade, during which he also released two independent  bested Sherman Oaks-based singer Katharine McPhee.

``I tell everyone (who plans to audition) to focus on today's performance,'' Lynn said. ``Do the song that shows you at your absolute best. We're looking for Looking for

The first shows will feature the audition sessions featuring the best and worst from each of the seven cities Seven Cities may refer to:

  • The Seven Cities of Hampton Roads, the largest communities in southeastern Virginia

. This year, something new will be added -- a song-writing contest in which professionals and amateurs will have the chance to pen tunes for the finalists.

``I think this whole thing is great,'' said Pete Oganesian of Woodland Hills, who was accompanying daughter Kathereen, 18, to the event. ``It gives the kids something to look forward to and excel at Verb 1. excel at - be good at; "She shines at math"

Once the Rose Bowl gate opened at 8 a.m. and the potential ``Idols'' were seated in the stadium, hopefuls were brought down in groups of four to perform in front of the panel of producers. Each was given little more than 30 seconds to make an impression. Most were rejected immediately.

``Auditioning after standing in line all night is not the optimal way to be heard at your best, but it serves to weed out the weaker ones,'' said Fae Simmons, general manager of the Singing Store, a Van Nuys shop that sells all manner of equipment for vocalists. ``We tell all our customers that plan to try out to show the judges what they're capable of. Show your range and style. Some of them have been frantic about picking their song at the last minute.''

It wasn't easy for Lacee Dewall. The 18-year-old spent 12 hours on a Greyhound greyhound, breed of tall, swift, sight hound developed nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt. It stands about 26 in. As late as 7 a.m. Tuesday, she wasn't sure whether to belt out ``Me & Bobby McGee'' or Rascal Flatts' ``Melt.''

Herrera's energy didn't seem to be lagging despite her 3 a.m. arrival. ``I'm not competing with anyone but myself,'' she said.

As for the very first person in line, Ken Fitzgerald, 27, a Cupertino contractor, took the honors after running to the front when the line began.

``This is all just for fun,'' he said.

``I'll give it my best and whatever happens, happens,'' he said. ``I always imagined this would be a great thing to do.''
