THE NEW YORK TIMES SUNDAY NEWSSTAND PRICE TO INCREASE

NEW YORK, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Times will increase the suggested newsstand price of its Sunday newspaper to $2.00 from $1.50 in the greater New York metropolitan area effective Sept. 26. The announcement was made by Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of the newspaper. The price increase will not affect weekday editions or Sunday home delivery services.
"The New York Times is committed to offering its readers the finest journalism available. We seek to constantly improve the newspaper and provide good value for readers and advertisers alike. This price increase is necessary to help fund these improvements and to offset rising production and distribution costs," Mr. Sulzberger said.
In the last few years, The New York Times has increased its coverage in The Metro Section and Sports. It has introduced two new sections, Styles of The Times and The City. It built a state-of-the-art color printing and distribution facility in Edison, N.J. It introduced color into The Sunday Times in the Book Review and Real Estate sections, with plans to add color to the Travel section this fall and in Arts & Leisure early next year.
"We will continue to innovate and add value to the newspaper," said Mr. Sulzberger. "At the same time, we are maintaining our commitment to provide an unparalleled report on the news of the world, the nation, and the variety of activities that make up human life."
The New York Times has the largest circulation of any seven-day newspaper in America with 1.2 million copies on weekdays and 1.8 million copies on Sundays. Approximately 600,000 copies of the Sunday New York Times are sold on newsstands in the areas covered by the price increase. An additional 400,000 copies are delivered to homes by The New York Times in the area on Sunday and are not affected by the price increase.
The previous Sunday price increase was in September 1990 from $1.25 to $1.50.
