THE NEW YORK TIMES REACHES AGREEMENT WITH DRIVERS' UNION
 ON WHOLESALER OPERATIONS
NEW YORK, April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Times (AMEX: NYT) announced the way was paved to complete its purchase of two New York area wholesale newspaper distributors, Metropolitan News Company and Newark Newsdealers Supply Company, when it reached an agreement today with the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers' Union (N.M.D.U.).
The N.M.D.U. members drive delivery trucks for The New York Times and for the wholesalers who also distribute The Times and many other newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, The Daily News and New York Post. Metropolitan News distributes through most of New York City and Newark News distributes in central and northern New Jersey. Representatives of The Times and the union conducted intensive negotiations during the past month before reaching agreement late today. The agreement, whose terms were not announced, is subject to ratification by the full membership of the drivers' union.
The agreement also paves the way for the union membership to vote on the agreement The Times reached last December with the drivers' union that includes provisions to facilitate the opening of a new $450 million printing and distribution facility in Edison, N.J. The union president, Douglas LaChance, had said he would not bring the Edison agreement to a vote until he also had an agreement with the companies that represent the wholesaler system. Now the vote for ratification will include both agreements. In a separate but related negotiation, Arthur Imperatore who has a contract to buy two other wholesale distributors, Westfair Newspaper Distributors and Newspaper Distributors Company (N.D.C.), also reached an agreement with the same drivers' union. Westfair serves the counties of Westchester and Fairfield; N.D.C. serves Long Island.
These two wholesalers, along with Metropolitan News and Newark News, make up the majority of the wholesaler system that delivers most of The Times's city and suburban circulation.
