THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE PLANS THEMED FASHION ISSUE TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FASHION COVERAGE

NEW YORK, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sunday, Oct. 24, 1993, The New York Times Magazine will commemorate the 50th anniversary of fashion coverage in its pages by devoting the entire issue to the subject of fashion and its role in popular culture.
Jack Rosenthal, editor of The New York Times Magazine, said the special issue will use all of its elements -- the cover, the columns About Men and William Safire's On Language, even the crossword puzzle -- to examine fashion from a variety of vantage points.
"The issue will not be a fashion magazine, but rather a magazine about fashion," Mr. Rosenthal said. "Fashion is not just clothing; it's culture, business, the way we live."
The historic issue, which is expected to exceed its usual size to 150 pages, will include photographic looks at fashion "then and now," plus stories from both mainstream fashion writers as well as other writers who will look at the subject from unusual perspectives.
Adam Moss, editorial director of the Magazine, said: "This issue will be as much a feast for the mind as it is for the eyes. We aim to take fashion very seriously, as a lens through which to view 50 years of a society in constant motion. It will also be a lot of fun."
Claudia Payne, The Times's director of fashion news, said: "This Magazine is designed for anyone interested in the culture of today; and fashion has become an integral part of that culture. Fashion is knit into the fabric of daily life, and at every price point."
Carrie Donovan, deputy editor for style, said: "Fashion is not hogwash; it's history. This Magazine will be like looking at a panorama of social history."
The issue will mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the Magazine's continuous fashion coverage with the name, "Fashions of The Times," on October 24, 1943. This coverage became a weekly feature in the Magazine, and later also evolved into expanded Magazine Part 2 reports with the same title. (Fashions of The Times continues to be published as separate Part 2's twice a year.) To support the fashion industry's resurgence after World War II, The Times also created a series of Broadway fashion shows under the "Fashions of The Times" banner.
William L. Pollak, The Times's executive vice president for sales, said: "For 50 years, fashion has been showcased in The New York Times Magazine, both in terms of reporting and creative advertising that readers spend time with on Sunday mornings. This celebration gives us an opportunity, much in the spirit The Times displayed in 1943, to once again salute the fashion industry."
Advertisers in the October 24 fashion issue will be supported by customized merchandising packages. The issue will be heavily promoted in The Times's Styles of The Times and the Magazine to benefit all advertising categories, including those other than fashion. In addition, an advertising campaign in the trade publication, Women's Wear Daily will break in June.
As part of the anniversary celebration, the Magazine also plans a fashion event, and it will work with department and specialty shores to create fashion window displays.
Special anniversary rates are available to all advertising categories. Reservations and materials closings are September 9 for four-color ads; and September 20 for black and white. For more information, contact Lou Fabrizio, at 212-556-4000.
