After studying architecture together at the University of Cambridge, in 1975 the Vales published "The Autonomous House",

This is the latest book by the Vales, written in New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. , where they moved in 1996. After setting the context with a resume of Utopias (eg. Bellamy, Morris, Wells and Brenda Vale's 'Albion'), the book describes the theory behind their house in Southwell, and the practical aspects of designing and building it , with references to other autonomous houses as well as comparisons with 'the standard house'. The book reads well, and when the figures get too heavy, relief is provided by lighter snippets of information, some most amusing. The rigour rig·our
