 - When it comes to teaching children about nature, Tina Raleigh's philosophy is, ``the younger, the better.''

Raleigh Raleigh (rôl`ē, räl`ē), city (1990 pop. 207,951), state capital, and seat of Wake co., central N.C.; the site was selected for the capital in 1788, and the city was laid out and inc. 1792.  is the creator and director of Placerita Canyon Nature Center's Hand-N-Hand In Nature program, where children ages 3 to 5 and their parents learn about nature through short hikes, live animal presentations, stories, songs and crafts.

She developed the program about 18 months ago after noting that while the nature center had several programs for older children, there was nothing for preschoolers. Raleigh feels it's important that children learn to take care of the environment while they are young.

``These children are going to be the stewards over the earth when they grow older, so if we plant the seeds early, they will take good care of the environment,'' she said.

Raleigh realizes that preschool children tend to have short attention spans, so she makes sure the classes move along quickly and contain lots of hands-on activities. The live animal presentation - which features raccoons, snakes Snake 1

, opossums and birds of prey - is a favorite part of the class for both the children and their parents.

``The parents have a good time because they're learning new things also,'' Raleigh said. ``Plus its a social time to meet other parents of young children in the area.''

During the hikes, Raleigh explains to the children about what they are seeing like hawks Hawks   , Howard Winchester 1896-1977.

flying overhead, bird's nests in the trees and snake holes along the trail.

``I don't really have to say that much during the hikes - nature will always tell us a story if we just look around us,'' she said.

The classes meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays with new sessions beginning each month. The program fee is $40 per month.

The theme for the month of August will be weather and water, and Raleigh plans to teach the children which animals live in the water and why it is important to keep our water clean, plus different kinds of weather and how it affects plants and animals Plants and Animals are a Canadian indie-rock band from Montreal, comprised of guitarist-vocalists Warren Spicer and Nic Basque, and drummer-vocalist Matthew Woodley.[1] They are signed to Secret City Records. .

Raleigh has several fun activities planned in keeping with the theme, including squirt gun play time, a fishing trip and a ride on the Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. ``We try to make it as fun as possible, but at the same time these kids are learning things that will help them for the rest of their lives,'' Raleigh said.
