launched a show-business comeback Tuesday on the 69th anniversary of his first appearance in ``Steamboat Willie Steamboat Willie (1928) is an animated cartoon featuring Mickey Mouse released on November 18, 1928. It was the third Mickey Mouse cartoon to be made, though the first with sound. Disney decided to use Pat Powers Cinephone system. .''

Mickey will star in a new weekly cartoon show beginning in January 1999, Walt Disney Noun 1. Walt Disney - United States film maker who pioneered animated cartoons and created such characters as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck; founded Disneyland (1901-1966)

, Walt's nephew and vice chairman of the company. Both ``gag'' and ``story'' cartoons will be featured.

Mickey, the icon of the parent company and among the most merchandised characters on the planet, has appeared in 120 cartoons and movies, along with animation for the ``Mickey Mouse Club'' show during the 1950s.

But he's only starred in two cartoons since 1953 - ``Mickey's Christmas Carol'' in 1983 and ``Runaway Brain'' in 1995 - although he did make a cameo appearance in Disney's ``Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'' in 1988.

Walt Disney provided Mickey's voice until 1946.

``This is more than a return to our company's roots - it's the restoration of a staple of cartoon entertainment for people around the globe,'' Roy Disney said in a prepared statement. ``Mickey, Donald and Goofy and the rest of the studio's beloved characters represent pure fun.''

Disney has not decided whether to air the 22-minute ``MouseWorks'' show, which also will feature cartoons with Donald Duck Donald Duck

Pre-production work has started at Disney animation headquarters in Burbank. TV animation executive Barry Blumberg said Disney is ``very close'' to starting animation work on the project. Blumberg also said the January 1999 target will be moved back if necessary.

``We'll take as much time as we need to get it right,'' he said.

Blumberg said the idea of launching a Mickey-led series had been under consideration for several years, while the ``MouseWorks'' series began to take shape six months ago.

Other major characters also have been absent in recent years. Donald first appeared in 1934 and starred in 127 cartoons, the last in 1961. Goofy made his first appearance in 1932 and starred in 47 other cartoons and in ``A Goofy Movie'' in 1995.
