THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY TO DOUBLE SIZE OF HECHT'S WITH NEW STORE AND OPEN NORTH CAROLINA'S FIRST LORD & TAYLOR STORE

 ST. LOUIS, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company today announced expansion plans for two of its department store divisions, Hecht's and Lord & Taylor, at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, N.C.
 Hecht's will open a new 175,000-square-foot, two-level store, replacing a smaller site in the mall. The smaller 86,000-square-foot location will be renovated and expanded to 100,000-square-feet to accommodate North Carolina's first Lord & Taylor store.
 Hecht's, established in 1857, has 43 stores in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. In North Carolina, Hecht's operates stores in Greensboro, Fayetteville, Durham, Winston-Salem, and most recently, added its second store to Charlotte at Carolina Place. Hecht's also has a second location in Raleigh at Cary Towne Center.
 According to Irwin Zazulia, president and chief executive officer of Hecht's, "We are very excited about our new and larger store. The expansion reflects Hecht's firm commitment to better serve customers in the Raleigh area. Our store will continue to offer fashion, quality and value in merchandise, as well as the exceptional and friendly service that is Hecht's trademark."
 Lord & Taylor currently operates 46 stores and serves the top metropolitan markets in the country. It is the oldest specialty department store in the United States.
 Marshall Hilsberg, chairman and chief executive officer of Lord & Taylor said, "Our new store in the Crabtree Valley Mall will reflect the fashion leadership, personalized customer attention and high quality merchandising standards that Lord & Taylor represents.  Hecht's will be ready for business in spring 1995. Lord & Taylor is scheduled to open in fall 1995. At present, both stores have successful operations in the same mall at Tysons Corner Center and Fair Oaks Mall in northern Virginia.
 In 1992, Hecht's and Lord & Taylor each generated sales of $1.2 billion. The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 304 department stores and 3,658 Payless ShoeSource stores.
