 SALES INCREASED 8.9 PERCENT JULY
 ST. LOUIS, Aug. 6, /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company today reported preliminary sales of $667.4 million for the four-week period ended Aug. 1, an increase of 8.9 percent from sales of $612.8 million during the similar period a year ago.
 Sales for the first six months of fiscal 1992 were $4.69 billion, up 6.7 percent from sales of $4.40 billion in the same period last year.
 Department store sales for July were $541.6 million, an increase of 6.8 percent or $34.7 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $125.8 million, up 18.8 percent or $19.9 million.

 (A) Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 During July, May opened a new Foley's department store at Rolling Oaks Park Mall in San Antonio. Payless ShoeSource opened 48 net new stores, including its first stores in Hawaii.
 Payless ShoeSource now operates in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $4.87 billion in 1992 and $4.69 billion in 1991.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 319 department stores and 3,403 Payless ShoeSource stores.
