 THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY REPORTS 2.5 PERCENT
 SALES INCREASE FOR FIRST FOUR WEEKS OF DECEMBER
 ST. LOUIS, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales of $1.68 billion for the four-week period ended Dec. 28, up 2.5 percent from sales of $1.64 billion during the same four-week period last year.
 Year-to-date sales for the period ended Dec. 28 were $9.92 billion, an increase of 5.8 percent from sales of $9.37 billion reported in the similar year-ago period.
 Four-week sales for the period ended Dec. 28 for the department store segment were $1.55 billion, up 2.1 percent or $32.5 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $137.5 million, an increase of 6.8 percent or $8.8 million.

 (A) -- tore-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 Sales of the Thalhimers department store company have been included since November 1990. Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date sales, including non-replaced closed stores, were $9.93 billion in fiscal 1991 and $9.45 billion in fiscal 1990.
 The May Department Stores Company is one of the largest retailers in the United States, operating 333 department stores and 3,232 Payless ShoeSource stores.
