THE MATHWORKS' PRESIDENT JOHN N. LITTLE NAMED NEW ENGLAND
 SOFTWARE ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
NATICK, Mass., June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The MathWorks, Inc. today announced that its president and co-founder, John N. Little, has been named the 1992 New England Entrepreneur of the Year in the software industry, one of the fastest-growing markets in the region.
The award, bestowed through a program co-sponsored by Ernst & Young, Inc. Magazine and Merrill Lynch, is given annually to individuals whose ingenuity, hard work and innovation have created a successful and growing business venture. Little received his award during a ceremony in Boston on Thursday.
Little co-founded The MathWorks in 1984 along with Steven Bangert and Cleve Moler, a world-class applied mathematician. A visionary as well as a talented software developer, Little saw an opportunity to take advantage of the emergence of the personal computer by building high- performance engineering and scientific tools for that platform.
Initially, Little was the sole employee of the company, which now has a staff of more than 100 and a worldwide presence. He also was co- author and principal architect of the first version of the MathWorks' flagship product, MATLAB, a popular numeric computation software package.
The MathWorks has since expanded MATLAB into a powerful integrated system of mathematical, system design, analysis, modeling, simulation, and visualization tools. The software supporting computers for PCs to supercomputers, has enabled more than 100,000 scientists, engineers and mathematicians in more than 50 countries to expand their creativity and productivity.
As The MathWorks has grown, Little continued to serve as president and remains active in directing The MathWorks' technical direction and development efforts.
"The financial performance of The Mathworks is truly impressive," said Dennis Baltzley, director of Entrepreneurial Services at Ernst & Young in Boston. "In just three years the revenue, employee growth and profitability of the company have tripled as it has rolled out strong and innovative products that clearly filled market needs. John Little has been a guiding force behind this success, and we applaud him both for his vision and his effort, as well as the culture he developed at The MathWorks."
Previously, Little worked as a software product manager at Systems Control Technology, where he initiated, designed, developed, documented and marketed the company's first CAD/CAE software package.
He has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master's degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
As one of the regional winners of the New England Entrepreneur of the Year award, Little will be inducted into the Institute of American Entrepreneurs and will compete for the national "Entrepreneur of the Year."
The MathWorks Inc., based in Natick, develops and markets high- performance interactive engineering and scientific software for numeric computation, visualization, and dynamic system simulation. The MathWorks' products are distributed worldwide.
