It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges. , baseball and men's soccer.

Berry, helped by dedicated fund-=raising by school administrators and the athletes themselves, methodically built a solid athletic department at Christian Heritage, adding teams in women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's basketball, cross country and finally women's soccer during his last year.

``I feel good about leaving my situation here,'' Berry said from Christian Heritage on Wednesday. ``The athletic program here is in very good shape; that's because we've had some dedicated coaches and athletes who worked hard throughout.''

Berry felt comfortable at Christian Heritage and wouldn't have minded staying for an additional 10 years.

But when Mustangs men's basketball coach Bill Oates decided to step down from his dual position at athletic director, Berry couldn't pass up the offer.

``I talked about doing something like this in 10 years,'' Berry said of an AD position at The Master's, where he used to work in the admissions office. His son Matt is a senior pitcher on the baseball team.

``To me, this is a new challenge that I feel I'm ready for. It's such a great opportunity.''

He'll miss his job at Christian Heritage, which has a student body of roughly 600 but has won five National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association championships, three in men's basketball and two more in women's volleyball.

Berry is leaving his school on the highest of notes. The Hawks' men's basketball team was the feel-good story at the NAIA National Tournament. Seeded 16th in the 32-team field, Christian Heritage advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual runnerup Science and Arts of Oklahoma 99-88.

The Tulsa, Okla., fans adopted Christian Heritage as one of their favorites throughout the tournament.

``They were rooting for our kids the entire tournament,'' Berry said. ``Our players conducted themselves in the most sportsmanlike manner. It really culminated my time at Christian Heritage.''
