THE MASTER`S: MUSTANGS MASTERFUL : MEN TAKE BREAK AFTER PASSING MIDTERM EXAM WITH 13-2 MARK.Byline: Jim Inghram Staff Writer With a 31-game schedule, there is no mathematical halfway point for the men's basketball team, but having played 15 games with a current 12-day break between games and an eight-day break for the Christmas holiday, the current stretch is as near as The Master's can come. The Mustangs grade at this point would be an A-. The team is 13-2, its best record after 15 games in the program's history, and is on a 10-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins streak, run - an unbroken series of events; "had a streak of bad luck"; "Nicklaus had a run of birdies" . ``We're having success, but there are areas we can still improve,'' said coach Bill Oates. ``We can still improve our consistency on defense and reduce our turnovers. We could shoot a better percentage and get better execution on offense. We have a ways to go in some areas, but we are making progress, little-by-little.'' But with a 13-2 record, many things are going right. ``I'm really pleased that different people are stepping up at different times,'' Oates said. ``It seems that in almost every game we have five players scoring in double figures. In that regard we are getting great effort from several players.'' The second half: While the Mustangs' men's team has played several quality opponents in the first half of its schedule, several tough games remain. The team plays next against Division II Cal State Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. and also has matchups with Life University (in Marietta, Ga., on Jan. 25 and home on Feb. 19); Evergreen evergreen, term commonly used as synonymous with conifer and applied also to all those broad-leaved plants that bear green leaves throughout the year. The team has enjoyed phenomenal success in Oates' seven years at the school, but with improvement this could be his best yet. ``I think this team has a chance,'' Oates said. ``We have good depth on this team. We haven't had that luxury in the past. Time will tell.''
