THE MAKER OF TYLENOL LAUNCHES BRANDED INNOVATION
TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF 57 MILLION AMERICANS
NEW YORK, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- McNeil Consumer Products Company, maker of Tylenol(R) Brand products, unveiled Extra Strength Tylenol(R) Headache Plus, a new nonprescription pain relief product specifically formulated to provide relief from stress headaches with accompanying stomach upset, at a national news conference here today.
Citing the needs of 57 million Americans who report experiencing stress headaches with accompanying stomach upset, Anthony Temple, M.D., executive director, medical, McNeil, noted, "As a company, we pride ourselves in listening to our consumers and responding with products that deliver superior efficacy and safety. Tylenol Headache Plus represents our commitment to innovation, leadership, and responsiveness in addressing the healthcare needs of America."
Tylenol Headache Plus is the first nonprescription product to offer both analgesic and antacid medications in a caplet form, and combines the unsurpassed efficacy of Extra Strength Tylenol for mild-to-moderate pain relief with calcium carbonate, a proven and effective antacid ingredient. Tylenol Headache Plus contains the maximum allowable level of acetaminophen (1,000 mg. per dose) for unsurpassed mild-to-moderate pain relief, and the antacid ingredient calcium carbonate (500 mg. per dose) provides effective relief of stomach upset symptoms, such as heartburn and acid indigestion.
According to national estimates, 97 percent of adults report they experience significant stress. Health experts, including the panelists convened at the press conference, believe that more than 80 percent of all physical disorders are stress related.
"During the development of this product, we became aware of the personal and economic impact of stress in America. This knowledge has prompted us to develop a health-education campaign to increase public awareness of the relationship between stress and health and to facilitate consumer access to credible stress management resources," Dr. Temple added.
Details of the consumer education program, including the provision for the creation of The Stress Pain Relief Institute (SPRI), a professional advisory counsel comprising foremost professional authorities on stress and health, were announced at the press conference. SPRI Fellows were available at the event to counsel attendees on stress management issues and stress pain relief techniques. The program also will include consumer education materials such as "The Less Stress Handbook," a stress management reference guide, and quarterly newsletters.
"When you come right down to it, stress is an inescapable modern day reality. Quite simply, stress is actually a natural bodily response to changes in the environment," stated S. Leonard Syme, Ph.D., Professor of Epidemiology, University of California at Berkeley, and SPRI Fellow. "Unfortunately, the average lifestyle is such that many of us are constantly reacting to outside stimuli. Chronic exposure to stressors may lead to common symptoms, such as headache, backache, neckache and insomnia. Recent medical research indicates stress, and more accurately, our response to it, plays a significant role in serious illnesses, such as heart disease."
"Given the documented evidence linking stress and physical symptoms, it's important for people to know what options are available to them, whether they are nonprescription medications like Extra Strength Tylenol Headache Plus to treat stress headaches with accompanying stomach upset, relaxation techniques or change in diet," noted Reed Craig Moskowitz, M.D., director, New York University Stress Disorders Medical Service, and SPRI Fellow. He concluded, "The most important message we can share with the public is that as health professionals, we recognize stress as a health risk, but one which can be personally and practically controlled."
Extra Strength Tylenol Headache Plus is available nationally in retail outlets, in packages of 24, 50 and 100 caplets. The product will be supported by a national advertising campaign and consumer promotion program.
