Liquid seduction. Elixir elixir /elix·ir/ (e-lik´ser) a clear, sweetened, alcohol-containing, usually hydroalcoholic liquid containing flavoring substances and sometimes active medicinal ingredients.

Perfume has always had an intoxicating effect, which is why it's a traditional Valentine's Day gift, according to national surveys such as Mervyn's California American Women's Profile, which ranks it behind roses, diamonds and dinner.

While most of us dab fragrance behind the ears or spray a cloud of it and walk through it (so it clings to our hair and clothing), perfume used to be used as a mouthwash mouthwash /mouth·wash/ (mouth´wosh) a solution for rinsing the mouth.

It was one big fragrance orgy, according to Julia Muller in ``H&R Book of Perfume'' (Johnson Publications Limited; $25), much like the '80s when women were into power suits and scents (remember Giorgio and Poison?).

Now there's a lighter, fresher scent in the air that's reminiscent of the '70s. But when it comes to romance, men still like the classics, especially Chanel No. 5. It's a semi-heavy aldehydic Al`de`hy´dic

While perfume experts such as Muller talk about families of perfume and how personalities are attracted to different scents (shy types like Oriental scents, extroverts prefer fresh florals), saleswomen say we're often lured by more than the scent.

So it's no wonder that Calvin Klein's Obsession is a popular choice with male shoppers on Valentine's Day, observes Caryn Keough, who's been selling perfume at Robinsons-May at the Topanga Plaza mall in Canoga Park for 23 years.

``You've got the provocative TV commercials, the designer recognition and the heavy blend of musk and vanilla that most men find very sensual,'' Keough explains. She adds that similar love notes are found in the classic Shalimar and the newer Angel by Thierry Mugler, although her store doesn't carry the latter (it's available at Nordstrom).

Other scents that appeal to men, says Keough, are Calvin Klein's soft, powdery pow·der·y

``Typically, men know what they want and ask for it, but sometimes they ask what's new,'' she said. And that's when she and her co-workers offer them whiffs of Ralph Lauren's Romance, Clinique's Happy and Estee Lauder's Dazzling, which are all lighter floral fragrances.

And, when men say they want a pretty bottle, saleswomen are likely to show them Escada's heart-shaped bottle, Elizabeth Taylor's decorative purple bottle of Passion, In Love Again with a heart-shaped red top, and Joy, the distinctive black bottle with a bright red cap.

So, can a bottle really sell the scent?

``Men don't even bother to sample the fragrance when they see a bottle of Jean Paul Gaultier,'' says Perfumes Plus saleswoman Cuky Monzon. She says men walk up to the counter, see the bottle that resembles a woman's nude figure, and buy it for their lover. FYI "For your information." See digispeak.
