THE LIGHTER SIDE OF SHANE MIRANDA; WEIGHT-LOSS DIET PAYS OFF FOR CAMARILLO SENIOR.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Forgive Shane Miranda if he sounds like one of those weight-loss commercial spokesperson: I lost 33 pounds in six weeks and I feel great!

He really did lose that extra weight, which he put on as a result of an arm injury and loss of self-confidence. Now, the Camarillo High senior infielder/pitcher is down to 202 pounds and swinging the bat and throwing the ball as if he were a sophomore.

In Tuesday's Pacific View League showdown with Rio Mesa, Miranda went 3 for 4 with a home run, double, single and had five RBI RBI

``I see a more excited kid,'' Camarillo coach Scott Cline cline, in biology, any gradual change in a particular characteristic of a population of organisms from one end of the geographical range of the population to the other.  said. ``Last year was a tough one for him.''

He still did that well, but he was off from his sophomore year when he went 7-1 with a 2.00 earned-run average and hit the ball hard, helping the Scorpions win the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. But Miranda missed running around in the field and pitching. During practices, he stood and watched while nonhitting drills occurred.

``I started feeling sorry for myself that I couldn't be out there,'' he said. ``I was used to doing it. It was tough to adjust to just being a DH.''

His weight soared. When the season ended, Miranda weighed 235 pounds, although Cline thinks it was higher.

Cline sat Miranda down for two hours and told him he had to lose weight, not only to be more productive on the field but also to get noticed by colleges.

``It's a tough issue to talk about,'' Cline said. ``As a coach, it's our job to get him in shape.''

Miranda started running, rode the bicycle and hit the gym three times a week in the summer, taking particular care not to further damage his arm. He stretched and did light weight work to tone it.

, which restricts carbohydrates. Miranda joined his father on the diet Feb. 8.

The weight has continued to come off. Now, Miranda is batting .440 for the 6-2 Scorpions, who played at Rio Mesa Friday.

Cline recently pulled Miranda aside and told him how good he looks.

``His muscle content is way up, and his fat content is way down,'' Cline said.
