Flamenco dancing is characterized by colorful costumes, intense and erotic movements, stamping of the feet (zapateado), and clapping of the hands (palmada , one name sums up the combination of deep feeling and control that marks the very best: Carmen Amaya Carmen Amaya (November 2, 1913 - November 19, 1963) was a flamenco dancer and singer, born in the Somorrostro slum of Barcelona, Catalonia. She danced from the time she was 7 years old. In 1929, she made her debut in Paris, to warm acclaims and admiration of her dancing skill. (1913-1963). Her father took her to dance in Barcelona bars at the age of 4; her fiery performances launched a career that eventually found her touring the world with her own company.
