AS PRIMARY PROVIDER OF TERRESTRIAL DATA SERVICES
CINCINNATI, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today announced a three-year agreement with The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), which will make MCI the primary provider of terrestrial leased data services for the retail food industry giant.
Specific financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
MCI will provide a national network to link Kroger's warehouses, distribution centers, dairies, bakeries and other related facilities to the Kroger Marketing Associations, which provide administrative and financial support to Kroger's field offices. MCI will also provide digital private line services to support Kroger's satellite network, which will transmit all store transaction data to Kroger's data center.
In addition, MCI will provide Kroger with a data network for disaster recovery through MCI Private Line Services. The network will involve more than 100 Kroger facilities nationwide.
"Through careful analysis, MCI has developed the most cost-effective telecommunications solutions available to enable Kroger to handle the future growth and ever-changing needs of its data network head on," said Jonathan Crane, president of MCI's National Accounts Unit. "MCI looks forward to expanding and changing its customized Kroger data network as Kroger's data requirements grow and change."
In addition to data network services, MCI will continue to provide long distance payphone service for Kroger stores nationwide, as well as an array of voice services.
