THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS ANNOUNCE NEW AGREEMENT WITH NORTHWEST AIRLINES

WASHINGTON, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) today announced the conclusion of a new agreement between the IAM and Northwest Airlines (NWA).
The IAM and Northwest resumed negotiations at the urging of U.S. Secretary of Transportation Frederico Pina. Northwest had planned to file bankruptcy papers on July 6. At a meeting between the parties in Washington, Pina warned that the bankruptcy of the nation's fourth largest air carrier would have a negative impact on our nation's air transport system, and personally requested the parties continue to seek solutions to avert the bankruptcy.
Since that meeting, representatives of the IAM and NWA continuously endeavored to reach a satisfactory agreement that would be acceptable to the 23,000 IAM represented members at NWA and avoid the drastic consequences of a bankruptcy.
Meeting in Washington, the five elected IAM Negotiating Committee's voted to recommend ratification of the tentative agreement to IAM members. The ratification procedure will begin next week.
