THE HYPE WISH YOU WERE HERE TWO BOOKS DELIVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA'S PAST BY WAY OF POSTCARDS.

L.A.'S PAST IN POSTCARDS: The concrete open space in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  now called Pershing Square was once Central Park, a place with more grass than parking spaces. Hollywood was once farm land. And the first movie studio was a modest row of houses.

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  then (and in a different sense now) was something to write home about. And people did.

Postcard collectors C. Milton Hinshilwood, Elena Irish Zimmerman and Marlin Heckman have put together two small Postcard History Series books - ``Old Los Angeles and Pasadena in Vintage Postcards'' and ``Pasadena in Vintage Postcards'' - that capture moments in time.

The books display black and white cards with short captions that include the place, time and, in some cases, the fate of the building and the message found on the card. One card showing Fourth and Main streets downtown in about 1908 has this message on the back: ``This is the poorest street in town. Broadway, Spring and Hill are much better than Main.''

The books are divided by type of building or scene from commercial to homes to parks and railways. Some sites such as Union Station and the Shrine Auditorium The Shrine Auditorium is a landmark large-event venue in Los Angeles, California, USA. It is also the headquarters of the Al Malaikah Temple, a division of the Shriners.  look much the same today; others no longer exist. We only wished the books had included more information on what became of places or pictures of the same spot today. But postcard collectors and local history buffs The name Buffs can mean:
  • Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment), a British army unit
  • Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes
  • Buffs Company, a Rifle Company of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada that parades out of Dalton Armoury in Scarborough.
will enjoy these glimpses into the past.

And maybe find something to write home about.
