GRAMMYS BY THE TON: It could take an extra day to hand out all the Grammy Awards set for the 44th annual ceremony next February.

The Recording Academy has added a new category to its rap field, bringing the total number of trophies awarded in 2002 to 101. The latest addition is best rap/sung collaboration, a nod to the increasing number of hits that include rap and sung elements.

In other changes voted in a trustees meeting recently, mastering engineers will be eligible to receive a Grammy for their work on the album of the year. The board also revised the remixer of the year category, which will now be called best remixed recording and will be awarded for a specific remixed recording, not for a body of work.

The 2002 Grammy Awards will take place the third week of February at Staples Center.
