THE HYPE SPECIAL ALL-SIMIAN EDITION GORILLAS IN OUR MIDST FOR VALLEY 'APES' ENTHUSIASTS, A COSTUMED LARK HAS EVOLVED INTO A SECOND CAREER.

, Kim Hunter and other stars. Penikas and his furry friends found themselves seated with the actors in the VIP area.

``I'd never actually seen the film in a theater before,'' Penikas said. ``I'd seen it many times on TV and video, but never on a big screen. No. 1, it was at the academy, No. 2 with the cast and No. 3 I'm in makeup. I thought, 'I've got to be the biggest kid in the world right now.' ''

What started as a quirky hobby has mushroomed into a solid side industry for Penikas and others in Apemania, who make public appearances and even hawk some old-style ape merchandise on their Web site, www.apemania.com. (The troupe includes professional actors, makeup artists, a Henson creature creator, a software designer and an advertising executive.)

Penikas says for him, going ape never gets old. He's sort of personally indebted to the film. ``That movie's what inspired me to get into the business.''

The studio has licensed more than 35 companies to manufacture everything from comic books, posters and action figures to bookends, slippers, cell phone covers, remote-controlled toys, shower caps, corkscrews and tattoos.
