THE HYPE MR. WINKLE, LITTLE STAR...HOW WE WONDER WHAT YOU ARE.

He's been called everything from a ``cat in a dog suit'' to ``some scientist's experiment,'' but to those who know him best, he's Mr. Winkle This article or section needs sources or references that appear in reliable, third-party publications. Alone, primary sources and sources affiliated with the subject of this article are not sufficient for an accurate encyclopedia article. . His owner, Lara Jo Regan of Los Feliz, who adopted Mr. Winkle from an animal shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.
, isn't even sure what breed of dog he is. Vets have estimated that the little pup is about 8 years old and may be part Pomeranian.

``If I knew what recipe he was, I'd tell,'' she said. ``I think he's a one-in-a-million mutt.'' Whatever the case, this little cutie cut·ie also cut·ey

is making headlines and he's become a national star.

Regan is an award-winning editorial photographer known for her pictures in Time, Newsweek and other magazines. But, prompted by the mini- mobs of Mr. Winkle fans that appear on her morning walks, she's decided to market Mr. Winkle's cuteness. So, after months of costume design Costume design is the design of the appearance of the characters in a theater or cinema performance. This usually involves designing or choosing clothing, footwear, hats and head dresses for the actors to wear, but it may also include designing masks, makeup or other unusual forms,  and prop production, Regan is releasing her favorite shots of the pup in the aptly named ``What is Mr. Winkle?'' 2001 Calendar. The 13-month calendar features photos of Mr. Winkle dressed up as everything from an alien to a bedroom slipper - all in hopes of answering that ever-present question.

There's even a Mr. Winkle Web site, www.mrwinkle.com, where you can check out a video proving the canine wonder is actually real. You can also purchase the calendar ($14.95) and Mr. Winkle posters ($9-$11) online. The calendar is also available at all Los Angeles-area Borders Books and Music locations.

If you want to meet Mr. Winkle and Regan, they'll be paw stamping and signing the calendar 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at Borders Books and Music, 330 S. La Cienega There are at least three places with the name La Cienega (from the Spanish La Ciénaga: swampland, marsh or bog):

VIDEO GAMES

THE ICING ON THE QUAKE: Perhaps the most celebrated series of computer games in the notorious first-person shooter category have been id's brilliant Quake series, capped most recently by Quake III Arena Quake III Arena or Quake 3, abbreviated as Q3A or Q3, is a multiplayer first-person shooter computer and video game released on December 2, 1999. .

As of this week, Quake III has come to Sega's Dreamcast videogame console, bringing with it a few wrinkles, such as 14 new arenas, a four-player split-screen mode and, wonder of wonders, the ability to play online against other Dreamcast and, yes, PC owners of the game over the SegaNet network.

You can use the standard Dreamcast controller to play, but hard-core shooter fans will want to use Sega's plug-in keyboard and newly available mouse. How does it work? One gaming magazine editor, a Quake fanatic, pronounced it surprisingly responsive. And Quake III for the DC moves fast and looks good, even online, where SegaNet is tweaked for speed. This is a very good, very bad thing.
