THE HYPE LITTLE LIVERPOOL LOCAL BAND HIT THE BIG TIME FOR AN L.A.-STYLE BRITISH (RE)INVASION.

Agoura Hills as the new Liverpool?

You can laugh, but there's been a stream of major label signings out of that and other quintessential bedroom communities nearby.

Along with Epic/Sony's top-selling rap-rockers Incubus incubus (ĭng`kybəs), lascivious male demon said to possess mortal women as they sleep and to be responsible for the birth of demons, witches, and deformed children. , look for Onesidezero, whose record was recently issued by Madonna's Maverick imprint. Up-and-comers from Agoura Hills/Calabasas include Vent and Hometown Hero.

Also just hitting the big time is Hoobastank, whose eclectic self-titled major label debut is out now from Island. The quartet got a huge boost from radio stations like influential KROQ-FM (106.7), which latched onto the track ``Crawling in the Dark.''

Hoobastank guitarist Dan Estrin Dan Estrin (born July 9, 1976) is the guitarist of the band Hoobastank. He and Doug Robb originally founded the band and recruited Markku Lappalainen and Chris Hesse. Their success grew after the release of They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To.  says the global success of Incubus is helping fuel the local music scene.

``A lot of us were friends in school, and that's where we started,'' he said. ``If we have anything in common, it's that we have a good time when we play. I don't think that comes across enough these days.''

The group's origins go back to the early '90s, when singer Doug Robb and Estrin found themselves competing against each other in an Agoura high school Agoura High School is a four-year high school, freshman-senior, in Agoura Hills, California, United States. It is the largest high school in the Las Virgenes Unified School District, with an enrollment of approximately 2,400 students.  battle of the bands.

That led to a collaboration and, with the addition of Sherman Oaks-based bassist Markku Lappalainen Markku Lappalainen was born on April 6, 1973 in Finland. He is the former bassist of the band Hoobastank. He was in the band from 1997 until 2005. Why Markku left the band is not clear. He left after Hoobastank's 2005 summer tour. He has since been replaced by Josh Moreau.  and drummer Chris Hesse Christopher River Hesse is the drummer for the american rock band Hoobastank. He was born on January 24, 1974 in Humboldt County, California. , Hoobastank began swimming in the opposite direction from the burgeoning rap-rock sound.

``We've never been a band to say this is the one type of music we play,'' Estrin, 24, said. ``We've always been open to so much more than just heavy music. I like loud music as much as mellow stuff. Being able to do both gives you more freedom.''

Incubus has long mentored Estrin's band. Hoobastank, in fact, recently finished up a stint as opening act on Incubus' East Coast tour and will travel to Europe in the New Year with the Calabasas-based group as well.

``It's incredible to think our music is finding its way to people all over the world,'' the guitarist said. ``I mean, we were amazed to get an e-mail from a kid in Brazil to let us know he had created a Web site dedicated to our band.''

Unlike Incubus' thrash and hip-hop elements, which include rap vocals and a turntablist, Hoobastank boasts an old-school rock feel with invigorating in·vig·or·ate

melodies and sharp hooks fueled by electric and acoustic guitars.

``When I was starting out, I loved hard rock and the songs you'd hear on the radio,'' Estrin said. ``I think there was a sense of realness about the music, and that's something people want today.

``If the players really connect with their music, it can't help but connect with the crowd.''
