THE HYPE FRINGE BENEFITS TOM ALLEMAN'S PHOTOGRAPHS CAPTURE THE PERFECTLY PECULIAR ASPECTS OF L.A. LIFE.Before becoming a film critic for the Daily News and having my nights (and days) dominated by movies, I used to partake in Verb 1. partake in - be active in participate, take part - share in something 2. partake in - have, give, or receive a share of; "We shared the cake" partake, share actual journalism, often with my photographer friend, Tom Alleman. Tom and I would go see strange things in stranger places - Mexican wrestling in Compton, Miss Belly Dancer USA competitions at Elks Lodges - and focus our attention on the fringes of these fringe events. Tom has moved on to bigger and better things. His photos are published regularly in national magazines like Time, People and U.S. News & World Report U.S. News & World Report Weekly newsmagazine published in Washington, D.C. U.S. News was founded in 1933 by David Lawrence (1888–1973) to cover important domestic events; he founded World Report in 1945 to treat world news. The two magazines were merged in 1948. . But he's still ignoring the obvious in favor of the ambiguous. And he still takes a damn good picture. Tom's work will be on display beginning Thursday at the Perfect Exposure Gallery in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. There are photos of flying saucers (albeit grounded ones) in South Central, prayer meetings at the Coliseum and down-and-out clowns (though not in Beverly Hills). Tom calls his photographic essay a ``meandering, minor-key tone poem.'' Me, I'm constantly amazed at the way he turns ordinary settings into visual poetry. ``Fin de Siecle'' opens Thursday at Perfect Exposure Gallery, 3513 W. Sixth St., Los Angeles. A reception from 6 to 9 p.m. will mark the opening. Normal gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The exhibition runs through Aug. 31. - Glenn Whipp QUOTABLE quot·a·ble adj. The disc, in stores Tuesday, is one of the strongest ``Now'' sets yet, moving from up-tempo pop-r&b to savvy hip-hop to well-chosen guitar-rock. Oddly, the album's rock picks (Lifehouse, Aerosmith, Evan & Jaron, American Hi-Fi) come at disc's end, reflecting the tastes of today's record-buyers who've made teen-pop and hip-hop the fossil fuels that power the music industry. Also out Tuesday are new efforts from Perry Farrell, Sam Phillips, Crystal Method, Judas Priest and Nanci Griffith. - Fred Shuster IN THE RING THE ROCK IS COOKIN' AGAIN: The Great One will be back in the ring Monday on TNN's ``Raw Is War'' at 9 p.m. Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, returns to wrestling after a four-month hiatus to film ``The Scorpion King,'' an action film based on the role he played in ``The Mummy Returns.''
