But that didn't keep him from beating 131 other chili chefs in the International Chili Society's World Championship in Reno, with a recipe called ``Warning Shot Chili Runs for Your Life.''

``Just the right blend and the right heat and the right everything at the right time,'' Burt said of his Oct. 6 win, which came with a $25,000 prize. ``Sometimes it comes out right and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you just get lucky.''

He credits his victory to a good blend of spices, luck and his wife. His involvement with chili competition began as support for his wife, Susie Baumberger, who began competing nearly eight years ago.

``I was tagging along and got bored and finally started doing it,'' Burt said.

``Everything I know I learned from her,'' Burt added. ``She's a great teacher. I basically got lucky with her recipe.''

Said Baumberger with a laugh: ``He stole my hobby A hobby is a spare-time recreational pursuit. Origin of term

``Some of these cooks have been cooking 30 years and never won anything, so I feel rather fortunate cooking so few times and making it to the worlds and winning the worlds. Unbelievable,'' Burt said.

With his $25,000 winnings, Burt's only plan is to buy a new CD player for their camping van.

Burt retired from a 30-plus year career as a court sheriff's deputy 2 1/2 years ago. Baumberger works part-time as an attorney.

This is Burt's first trip to the world championships. As the winner, he will support the International Chili Society by attending chili cook-offs as a representative of the society, and in November will travel to New York New York, state, United States
