THE GREATEST GIFTS.

Middle School

Teaching in a school district that has a diverse population has made me aware of many cultural differences. The selection of appropriate art activities for all students during the winter holiday season, showing sensitivity for these individual differences while remaining challenging and consistent with the National Art Standards, began to be a balancing act of major proportions.

Following a study of design elements and positive and negative space, my curriculum suggests the designing and printing of linoleum linoleum (lĭnō`lēəm), resilient floor or wall covering made of burlap, canvas, or felt, surfaced with a composition of wood flour, oxidized linseed oil, gums or other ingredients, and coloring matter.  blocks. As part of the introduction to the lesson, I asked the class to identify other uses for printmaking printmaking

Following both written and verbal directions, as well as a teacher demonstration, the students put their best folding and gluing techniques to work, forming their linoleum print into a decorated dec·o·rate

When they saw the finished results, the classes discussed how the artist plays an important part in the production of everyday items, comparing tote bags from local department stores This is a list of department stores. Shopping bags and the time of the year triggered the thoughts of gift giving and a list of values the students thought were the most important to them. The list began with friendship, loyalty, love, and time, a healthy mind and body, and appreciation of art and music. As the list grew, the words were reproduced on a computer and printed out large and colorfully. Each thought was placed in a shopping bag for the display.
