Made possible by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, it promotes the love of reading and serves as an outreach to children and their families. The Beginnings of Children's Literature The earliest of what came to be regarded as children's literature was first meant for adults. and how to gain a child's interest in reading. ``The program made the library a more community-centered place for our patrons to come to,'' says Maureen Wade, project director for GAB. ``The volunteers truly show their generosity of spirit in reading to the kids, getting the kids excited about reading and watching the kids improve in their reading.'' Judie Mount, better-known by the kids as ``Grandma Judie,'' has been volunteering at the Platt Branch Library in Woodland Hills for the past three years. A West Hills resident and former teacher, Mount says she is trying to give back all the nice things that people have done for her. It's a nice program for seniors, and it's a very important thing for young kids.'' The Grandparents and Books program needs adult volunteers to read to children.
