While the singing officially begins early Sunday, thousands of amateur performers have been waiting at the Pasadena football stadium since Friday for their shot at the top-rated TV talent contest.

Some 10,000 to 15,000 ``Idol'' hopefuls are expected to be there once the open audition starts. Last November's cattle call cattle call

Based on a British TV amateur talent series, ``American Idol'' reworked the formerly dormant ``Star Search'' format last summer, capturing a young audience fascinated by the you-be-the-judge element and Cowell's nasty comments. The first season culminated in about 23 million viewers glued to the screen to see Kelly Clarkson crowned the winner.

``I think it kind of appeals to that part of everyone that likes to see the underdog succeed,'' said Ray Richmond, a critic and columnist at the Hollywood Reporter, adding, ``We also like to see people screw up.''

As a result of their ``Idol'' exposure and subsequent record deals, Studdard, Aiken, Clarkson and 2002 runner-up Justin Guarini have had chart hits. Clarkson and Guarini starred in a movie this summer. Cowell landed a $2 million book deal. Seacrest is currently hosting spinoff ``American Juniors,'' also on Fox (Cowell drops by for a cameo Tuesday). And a national road show titled ``American Idols Live!'' - starring last season's finalists - is coming to an arena near you this summer.
