THE END FOR OAKS CHRISTIAN'S REDELL?

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON GITTELSON BITS

Among the compelling reasons national power Oaks Christian of Westlake Village wants to finish its football season in style is the probable retirement of coach Bill Redell Bill Redell (born April 17, 1941 in Red Bluff, California) is an American football coach and member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Redell serves as head coach at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California, since 2000, and has formed them into one of , 65.

``You could say it's 50-50, but I'm probably leaning towards retirement -- even though I know I look 35,'' Redell said. ``I'll decide in January, and I would expect one of my assistants, Mark Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

He played 19 seasons and 278 games in the NFL (third most in NFL history). , to be the new coach. Or both.''

Meanwhile, recurring speculation that veteran Canyon coach Harry Welch will call it a day is a rumor among the naive.

``I'm just 61, and I plan on coming back,'' said Welch, who's in the seventh year of his secondstint (18th overall), following an eight-year break.

``Retiring?'' Welch said. ``I've been hearing that every year since I've been back.''

One sports figure who's definitely bidding farewell is Garry Phelps, 59, who'll finish his duties as Palmdale High's athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  in June after coaching the boys' basketball team for 26 seasons ending in 2004.

``This is my last year. It's been 36 years since I started, and that's probably enough,'' Phelps said. ``I'm moving to Minnesota near a lake, so I'll just go fishing and have a good time. I'll have good memories of a lot of great games and the great people I've met.''

Phelps also is a veteran football official who has worked several Southern Section championship games, including last year's Div. II final won by Canyon over Hart of Newhall.

After such a disappointing football season for Valencia -- the Vikings finished an all-time worst 2-8 after reaching the semifinals or better five times since 1998 -- no one has more eagerly embraced the basketball season than Jimmy Baughman and Shane Vereen, who play both sports.
