``Frasier,'' which will move into television's plum time slot this fall - the 9 p.m. Thursday spot recently vacated by ``Seinfeld'' - also won awards for actors Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce David Hyde Pierce (born April 3, 1959) is a Screen Actors Guild, Tony and Emmy Award-winning American actor, best known for his co-starring role as psychiatrist Dr. Niles Crane on the NBC sitcom Frasier alongside Kelsey Grammer.  to go along with a technical award presented two weeks ago.

The show has won the Emmy for outstanding comedy series in each of its five years on the air and also became the only television program to win Emmys in five consecutive years.

``It's pretty cool,'' Grammer said after the show. ``It's a lot of hardware, and it's all it's cracked up to be. I don't think the momentous moment hit me until they said the name `Frasier.' It's just incredible that we've been able to do this five times in a row.''

Helen Hunt made some history of her own. The ``Mad About You'' star, who earlier this year won an Oscar for best actress in ``As Good as It Gets,'' took home her third consecutive outstanding comedy actress Emmy. Hunt is the first lead actress to win an Oscar and an Emmy in the same year. Grammer's Emmy for outstanding actor in a comedy was also his third.

``My dreams came true this year,'' Hunt said backstage. ``It's so big, I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

ABC's second-year law drama ``The Practice'' was named outstanding drama series, giving program creator David E. Kelley the Emmy that many expected him to win for his comedy, ``Ally McBeal.''

Andre Braugher (``Homicide: Life on the Street'') and Christine Lahti (``Chicago Hope'') won the dramatic lead performer Emmys.

Earlier in the year, Lahti won a Golden Globe for ``Chicago Hope'' but was late arriving to the stage because she was stuck in the ladies' room. This time she took no chances.

``OK, you can unlock the bathrooms now,'' she quipped from the podium.

For Braugher, who left the cast of ``Homicide'' this past season, winning the Emmy on his third try was quite special.

``That it came late does not make it any less sweet,'' Braugher said. ``I'm hoping this award will spur me to even greater heights.''

HBO's ``Don King: Only in America'' won awards for outstanding television movie and outstanding writing for a miniseries. Tom Hanks' celebrated ``From the Earth to the Moon'' was named outstanding miniseries. The 12-part HBO epic won three Emmys altogether after picking up 17 nods.

a period piece 30 years old, about 40,000 people in every state of the union working toward one common goal and achieving the impossible - something so impossible it was considered madness to consider it for thousands upon thousands of years,'' Hanks told the audience. ``Imagine what problems we could solve and the ills that we could cure if we chose to live the same way the people of Apollo did in the 1960s. Thank you, and God bless America.''

Garry Shandling, who entered the evening with no wins to show for 19 previous nominations, seemed to be still in a mild state of shock when he talked to reporters after winning an Emmy with Peter Tolan for comedy writing.

``It's so meaningful for us on our last year to finally win something,'' Shandling said. ``I figured we'd come away with nothing again.''

Shandling, who came to the show with NBC sportscaster Jim Gray, joked that he will be trolling (1) Surfing, or browsing, the Web.

``Hopefully, this award will be as powerful as the presidency, and I'll be able to meet someone,'' Shandling said, laughing.

Awards shows were popular with voters, not a huge surprise given the entertainment industry's penchant for self-congratulation. The Tony Awards won for outstanding variety special. The Academy Awards won five Emmys, including outstanding variety direction; Billy Crystal won for outstanding variety performance. For Crystal, it was his sixth Emmy and second for hosting the Oscars.

``This is a good negotiating tool, I'll tell you that,'' Crystal said, holding up his award.

NBC locked up both awards for best support in a comedy series. Lisa Kudrow was singled out of ``Friends'' as best supporting actress. David Hyde Pierce got his second Emmy out of five nominations for ``Frasier.''

Among the evening's most enthusiastic winners was Camryn Manheim, who won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her work on ABC law drama ``The Practice.'' Manheim, who brought her autograph book to the ceremony, dedicated the award to ``all the fat girls.'' Backstage, she was no less exuberant.

``I feel so sexy right now!'' Manheim roared. ``I was always told I would never make it on television, but I always had a strong `I'll-show-you' attitude. And here I am. It's incredible.''
