THE DRESS BARN, INC., REPORTS EARNINGS UP 40 PERCENT FOR FIRST QUARTER

STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 23 ~PRNewswire~ -- The Dress Barn, Inc. (NASDAQ: DBRN) today reported that earnings increased 40 percent for its first fiscal quarter ended Oct. 24, 1992. Net sales totaled $104.9 million, a 20 percent increase above net sales of $87.8 million for the prior year's comparable period. The company's comparable store sales increased 8 percent during this period.
First quarter net income increased 40 percent to $5.5 million or $0.25 per share compared with $3.9 million or $.18 per share for the prior year.
A spokesperson for the company commented, "We are pleased with our continued strong sales performance, which has produced six consecutive months, including November, of comparable sales increases. This has been particularly note worthy, as it has been accompanied by improved merchandise margins and a decrease in our selling, general and administrative expense ratio. We believe our merchants have put together one of our best fall and holiday offerings, with an emphasis on casual career dressing, and the customers are responding. Our aggressive store expansion program continues with 29 new stores opened during the quarter of 100 scheduled for the current fiscal year."
At Oct. 24, 1992, the company operated 587 stores, a net increase of 49 percent or a nine percent increase from the 538 in operation for the same period last year.
The Dress Barn, Inc., operates a chain of off-price women's apparel stores, offering in-season, moderate to better quality fashion apparel, primarily with nationally recognized brand names, at substantial discounts from department store prices.
