THE DISNEY CHANNEL ADDS 832,000 SUBSCRIBERS IN 1992

BURBANK, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Disney Channel added 832,000 subscribers in 1992, ending the calendar year with 7,080,000 subscribers, John F. Cooke, president of the premium network, announced today. This represents an increase of 13 percent over 1991, continuing The Disney Channel's 10-year trend of consistently strong subscriber growth.
For the third straight year, The Disney Channel has grown more than all of the other premium services combined. The Disney Channel's success can largely be attributed to quality, family oriented programming -- the hallmark of its lineup. The channel's day-part strategy aims to provide something for everyone in the house to enjoy each day. Mornings and early afternoons are designed for children, afternoons for teen-agers, evenings for families and evenings after 9 p.m. for adult viewers.
The Disney Channel provides more original programming than any other premium network and offers subscribers exceptional movies, series and specials, such as this summer's mini-series "Heidi," starring Jason Robards, the premiere film "The Ernest Green Story," starring Morris Chestnut, the award-winning children's series "Adventures in Wonderland," and the most music specials and concerts of any premium service, including "Harry Connick Jr.: The New York Big Band Concert," "Ringo Starr: Going Home," and "Tina Turner: Going Home."
The Disney Channel celebrates its 10th anniversary in 1993, beginning with a gala on April 18 at the site of the new Los Angeles Public Library's Central Library. A cross-country tour promoting literacy at libraries in 12 cities will begin the next day and end two weeks later in New York City. The tour will include several cast members from "Adventures in Wonderland" and the "Mickey Mouse Club" in an original production designed specifically for the nationwide journey.
The Disney Channel is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Co.
