For the first time in seven years, the championship of the Simi Valley boys' basketball tournament was claimed by someone other than the host Pioneers.

But at least Moorpark High made sure the trophy stayed in the neighborhood, beating Camarillo 65-54.

The Musketeers (4-0) put an an impressive show, using their quickness, shooting and size advantage to break out to a 21-5 lead in the first quarter, then cruising to the easy victory.

There was talk all summer that Moorpark was a team on the rise, and clearly the Musketeers are that after their performance last week.

Jose Rodriguez had 20 points and Keith Lawrence added 14 for Moorpark. The Musketeers' Blake Sharpe, who had six points, was named tournament MVP. David Reichel had 21 points for Camarillo.

--Taft 73, Simi Valley 58: Mustafa Asghari scored 27 points as the Toreadors of Woodland Hills (3-1) beat the Pioneers (2-2) for third place.

Asghari, perhaps the top returning point guard in the region, is Taft's primary scorer, although he'll soon be getting some help once Steve Smith and two other starters return from the football team.

The 6-foot Asghari got help Saturday from Nima Javaherion (12 points on four 3-pointers), Collins Ezeuka (11 points) and Julio Marshall (eight points),

Simi Valley got nine points from Tony Palomarez and eight each from Mitch McManus, Travis Clark, Gabriel Duarte and John Schock.

In the Saugus tournament:

--Harvard-Westlake 71, Oxnard 47: Ten players scored for the Wolverines of Studio City, who used a combination of hustle and depth to claim the championship.

``After a tough overtime win over Crescenta Valley last night, I was afraid the team would be tired,'' Harvard-Westlake coach Greg Hilliard said. ``We were able to go deep on our bench, and I'm very happy with the results.''

Tournament MVP Ryce Taylor led the Wolverines (4-0) with eight points, scoring six in the second quarter to help open up a 10-point halftime lead.

All-tournament pick Henry Patterson scored 19 points for Oxnard (3-1).

--Crescenta Valley 58, Saugus 54: Chris Tarne scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Falcons of La Crescenta (3-1) earned third place. Tarne and Jimmy Gofredo, who scored 15 points, were all-tournament selections.

All-tournament pick Mark Holmquist scored 13 points for Saugus (1-3).

--Westlake 67, Notre Dame 45: Jonathan Wiley scored 15 points to lead the Warriors (2-2) in the fifth-place game.

--Canyon 64, Glendale 61: Chad Eichten scored 15 points as the Cowboys (3-1) overcame 23 points by Hugo Guerrero of Glendale (1-3).

to win the consolation championship.

In the Antelope Valley girls' basketball tournament:

--Antelope Valley 54, Valencia 49: Sheena Crenshaw sat out much of the first half with a wrist injury. But when the Antelopes needed her most, Crenshaw was in the game and scored the decisive basket as A.V. won the championship game at Highland High.

Crenshaw's layup with less than a minute remaining in overtime period broke a 49-49 tie. She hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to secure the victory.

``The pain went away a little bit and I just decided to play through it,'' Crenshaw said. ``I just wanted to help my team. I didn't care how it felt, this is our tournament and I wanted to take it.''

Crenshaw and Shaquina Mosley, who shared tournament MVP honors, each scored 14 points for the Antelopes (3-0).

Crenshaw also drew four charges.

``She has so much heart,'' Antelope Valley coach April Davenport said of Crenshaw. ``We have a couple of players who are willing to put their bodies on the line for us and she's one of them.

``When she asked me to go back in - she's one of our leaders on the court - how can you turn that down?''

Freshman Kelly Tarver scored a game-high 26 points for Valencia (2-1).

--South Bakersfield 62, Quartz Hill 44: Alexis Crimes scored nine points for the losing Rebels (3-2) in the third-place game.

Laynotrell Allen scored 15 points for South Bakersfield.

--Highland 61, Lancaster 45: Amy Burleson and Lindsey Blunt each scored 13 points to lead the Bulldogs (2-1) to the consolation championship. Desiree Butler scored 11 points for Lancaster (1-2).

In the Burroughs boys' soccer tournament:

--Crespi 1, Servite 1: Shane Fierst scored a second-half goal for Crespi in a tie that was enough to advance the Celts to the quarterfinals.

--Rio Mesa 2, Don Bosco 0: The Spartans of Oxnard move on to a quarterfinal match with Westlake after this win and a 2-1 victory over Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta.

--Saugus 1, Camarillo: The Centurions used a Nick Allevato goal to defeat the Scorpions and win their group.

--Sylmar 2, Royal 1: Ernesto Lopez had a goal and an assist, and Miguel Madrigal added another goal as the Spartans advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with Saugus.

--Newbury Park 4, Kennedy 0: The win advanced the Panthers to a quarterfinal pairing with defending champion St. Francis.

--Servite 2, Burbank 0: Matt Willis scored twice for the Friars, who failed to advance due to an earlier tie with Crespi.

In City boys' basketball:

--Chatsworth names new coach: Chatsworth High has named Alemany boys' basketball coach Christian Dunbar as its new coach. Dunbar takes over for athletic director Fluke Fluker, who coached in the interim after Emad Whitney resigned. Chatsworth's first game will be Monday against Inglewood in the Fremont tournament.
