Westlake's Ross Fulgentis, a top-five performer as a redshirt freshman for UCLA's No. 16-ranked golf team, advanced to the sectional round of U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. Fulgentis was one of seven survivors - four of them area players - in a 71-player competition won by Camarillo's John Fielder, who shot 72.

Braemar Country Club pro Paul Holtby of Moorpark and amateur Richard Jimenez of West Hills were other area qualifiers, both shooting 74 on the 6,900-yard course to advance to June 8 sectional qualifying at Lake Merced Lake Merced is a freshwater lake in the southwest corner of San Francisco, California. Fulgentis, who helped Westlake High win a state title two years ago, was one of two members of that state championship team who competed at La Purisima, and the Warriors nearly came away with two qualifiers.

After losing three strokes to par in the first six holes, Kohut played even par the rest of the day, only to drive his tee shot on the 18th hole into a fairway bunker. He then hit that partially buried ball 150 yards to within 12 feet of the flagstick flag·stick

``We were driving home and I was ready to cry,'' said his father, George Kohut. ``And J.T. is just doing his homework.''

Scholarship winners: Tanya McLaughlin and Nyoke McKeith of Valley College have earned NCAA NCAA
abbr.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
 Division I basketball scholarships. McLaughlin is headed for Lamar University in Texas and McKeith to Southwestern Louisiana.

McLaughlin, a two-year All-Western State Conference forward who prepped at Canyon High, averaged 16.5 points and seven rebounds in her sophomore season at Valley. McKeith, from Taft High, averaged five steals this past season for the third-best steal average in the state.
