THE DAY IN PREPS: HART TIES WESTLAKE AT VISTA VALENCIA.

The best high school golf rivalry in the area lived up to its history Thursday. Westlake and host Hart battled to a tie at Vista Valencia, both teams shooting 326 while getting an average of 4.2 strokes over par from their five scoring players.

Valencia High took third in the three-way match with 338, as coach Rusty Switzer's Vikings (6-3-1) made their best showing ever against perennial Southern Section finalists Hart (5-0-1) and Westlake (8-0-1).

Hart senior Charlie Smith, coming back from a hand injury that sidelined him nearly two months, took medalist honors at 62. Ryan Wyman and Jesse Honea (both 64), Geoff Volker and Josh Edwards (both 68) rounded out the Hart scoring on the par-61 course.

Brad Burke topped Westlake at 63 and 1997 Southern Section runner-up J.T. Kohut added a 64 in his first match of the season after being sidelined by a back injury. Freshmen Brian O'Flaherty (65), Chris Finefrock (66), Lee Krieger and Wes Rundle (both 68) completed the scoring for the Warriors, who had to throw out one of those 7-over-par 68s.
