THE DAY IN PREPS: ALEMANY UPSETS NO. 2 HIGHLAND.

Unranked Alemany, held to one hit for six innings by Highland's Kelly Presten, rallied to beat the No. 2 Bulldogs 3-2 in a nonleague softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  game Tuesday at Highland.

Alemany bunched two singles with a hit batter, sacrifice and error to score two seventh-inning runs and knock Highland from the undefeated ranks. Winning pitcher Kim Deiner yielded six hits, two apiece by Melissa Rawson and Keri Pulcifer, but checked the Bulldogs (8-1) to two fourth-inning runs as the Indians improved to 7-3.

Toledo takes title: The No. 2-seeded Toledo Cherokee, making a second straight appearance in the Junior B national hockey title game, defeated top-seeded Suffolk, N.Y., 4-2 Tuesday night at Easy Street Arena in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

Junior golf: A field of 460 golfers has entered the 48th Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Junior Championships, which will be played at area courses Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The tournament, for players ages 7-17, offers competition in boys' championship, A and B divisions at Wilson and Harding in Griffith Park. Girls' championship, A and B divisions, also will be played at Wilson and Harding.

Palmdale takes Golden lead: Jason Gorman and Mike Arellano hit three-run homers to lead Palmdale (7-2, 3-0) to a 9-4 win over visiting Quartz Hill (7-2, 2-1) in a meeting of Golden League co-leading baseball teams at Palmdale. Ryan West hit his seventh home run for Quartz Hill.

Cougars keep pace: Jeff Toon had 15 kills, Danny Brookshire eight kills and Andrew Choy 29 assists as No. 8-ranked Kennedy (7-1, 4-1) defeated Chatsworth 15-4, 15-12, 15-12 in boys' volleyball to keep pace with No. 5-ranked Northwest Valley Conference leader Taft. The Toreadors (7-0, 5-0) swept Cleveland 15-2, 15-3, 15-4.
