THE CRA APPROVES A $750,000 CONTRACT TO PROVIDE SECURITY SERVICES AND PUBLIC INFORMATION FOR VISITORS ON HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD

HOLLYWOOD, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) today approved a $750,000 contract for Patriot Security to provide uniformed security officers along Hollywood Boulevard who would patrol the street on foot and supply public information to tourists, shoppers and residents.
"Stepped-up security will enhance the image of Hollywood and help to boost tourist and retail activity along Hollywood Boulevard, which are critical to the economic success of local merchants," said Councilman Mike Woo, who initiated the program.
Pending City Council approval, Patriot Security would provide approximately 12 uniformed officers to patrol the boulevard 15 hours a day, seven days a week, during peak business hours. The security officers, who would operate between La Brea Avenue on the west and Gower Street on the east, would complement the LAPD bicycle patrol, which also was initiated by Woo.
The unarmed security officers, who would communicate with each other via walkie-talkie radio, also would provide information about tourist attractions and Hollywood history and be trained in first aid and CPR. The supervisor on duty, who would patrol the boulevard in a motor vehicle, will have a cellular telephone to be accessible to merchants, police and other agencies when necessary.
The patrols would start 30 days after City Council approval.
Security officers would be part of the "Hollywood Cooperative Security Program," a one-year pilot program to help address the need for improved security on Hollywood Boulevard and in nearby residential areas as a vehicle to increase tourism, generate new economic investment, and boost the revitalization of Hollywood.
Volunteers from United Streets of Hollywood, a consortium of 24 neighborhood watch groups, will take turns patrolling residential areas. The volunteers also will have access to 25 cellular telephones to contact police and other agencies. Under the security program, $75,000 was allocated to purchase the telephones and fund the monthly service charges for one year. LA Cellular, the vendor which provided the cellular telephones, also donated 16 telephones to the police department, which will be prepared to take direct calls from neighborhood watch groups in the field.
The CRA will contract with several social service agencies to take telephone referrals from security officers on Hollywood Boulevard and volunteer patrols in residential areas to help homeless individuals. The agencies will provide assistance information for the homeless on the spot and offer transportation to appropriate social service agencies if needed.
Under the security program, the CRA will provide an additional $250,000 to increase staff and programs already being offered by social service agencies in the Hollywood area which assist the homeless, runaway teens and others who need help on the boulevard.
To assist patrols in residential neighborhoods, the LAPD has already begun orientation sessions for volunteers from United Streets of Hollywood on how to best work with the police, identify where problems occur and ways of handling potential incidents. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Hollywood Heritage will teach security officers about the history of Hollywood and how to provide information about tourist attractions and other tourist needs.
Patriot Security, a female-owned firm based in Los Angeles, currently provides on-site security services for the mixed-use Hollywood Galaxy on Hollywood Boulevard.
