This was the 97th year of Easter sunrise services in the canyon, said the Rev. Garnette Tweedt, pastor of the Mojave House of Prayer.

The traditional sunrise service was not held at the Hollywood Bowl this year because of ongoing work on a $24 million renovation project, but worshippers went instead to Forest Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary in the Hollywood Hills.

There were five Easter services at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is a cathedral church of the United States in the City of Los Angeles in California.  It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles[1] and seat of its archbishop, Roger Cardinal Mahony.  on Sunday, and up to 20,000 people attended, said Tod Tamberg, spokesman for the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese.

In his Easter message, Cardinal Roger Mahony mentioned the violence occurring in Iraq and elsewhere, noting that news of death has a numbing effect on many people. But Mahony said the story of Christ and his resurrection shows that life can conquer death.

``There are uncertain times regarding what is going on in Iraq and fears of terrorism,'' Tamberg said.

``We are getting a good number of people who are searching. We hope that they find spiritual fulfillment and that they come back.''

About 12,600 worshippers attended two services at Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch. The services were held under an enormous tent spanning one acre of the facility, and, in the main sanctuary, there was a special service for children.

Some 10,000 people attended services last year, but church officials anticipated more this year because of the newfound interest in Christianity due to Mel Gibson's film ``The Passion of the Christ,'' said Jan Rosser, director of communications Director of Communications is a position in the private and public sectors.
