THE COFFEE BREAK TURNS 90 AND BARCALOUNGER(R) GETS THE SCOOP

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., Nov. 24 ~PRNewswire~ -- 1992 marks the 90th anniversary of a ritual that millions of Americans practice on a daily basis -- the coffee break. And although the coffee break may be a common oasis in an otherwise arid office world, few are familiar with its humble origin 90 years ago.
According to a national wire service report discovered in the archives of the Barcalounger(R) Company, the coffee break was first instituted in 1902 by the Barcolo Manufacturing Company in Buffalo, New York. Barcolo, which later became Barcalounger, designed and produced the nation's first reclining chairs.
In the article, dated 1965, Alban W. Kirton, a former vice president of Barcolo, recounted the story of how it all started.
"We nominated a volunteer, the assistant bookkeeper," said Kirton. "We installed her in the boiler room with a hot plate heated by kerosene and everybody chipped in for coffee."
Kirton went on to say that Barcolo donated the time to drink the coffee and each employee pitched in five cents which would keep him in coffee for weeks.
"Coffee consumption in the workplace has changed dramatically since the 'boiler room days,'" says Ken Silverstein, publisher of "World Coffee & Tea" magazine. "Teas are becoming increasingly popular along with gourmet flavored coffees, and some offices are even offering espresso and cappuccino for their employees."
Regardless of the flavor, twice-daily coffee breaks have become a workday respite that Barcalounger employees and millions of others across the country couldn't imagine doing without.
Barcalounger is today headquartered in Rocky, Mount, N.C. The company manufactures a complete line of reclining chairs, and reclining sofas and loveseats.
