THE CATARACT EYE CENTER OF CLEVELAND TO OFFER LOWER SURGICAL COSTS AS A MEDICARE DESIGNATED CATARACT SURGERY PROVIDER

CLEVELAND, March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has selected the Cataract Eye Center of Cleveland as one of only five sites, in three different cities in the country to serve as a Medicare Designated Cataract Surgery Provider. As such, the center will participate in a three-year pilot program designed to test a "bundled payment" which provides savings to Medicare and its beneficiaries while maintaining a high standard of care. Samuel M. Salamon, M.D. and Gregory J. Louis, M.D., the Center's directors, perform virtually all their outpatient surgeries at St. Vincent Charity Hospital.
The new project is scheduled to begin this spring, continuing through early 1996. Salamon and Louis, with St. Vincent Charity Hospital, will combine the fees for hospital services, pre- and post- operative tests, surgery, anesthesia, and office visits into a comprehensive package with a single negotiated fee. Package prices ranging from $2,194 to $2,513 across all demonstration providers are substantially lower than what patients and Medicare currently pay. The practices chosen to participate have established high levels of quality care.
"This program was developed in response to the widespread concern about the increasingly high costs of health care in America," Salamon explained. "As a Medicare Designated Cataract Surgery Provider, our center will be able to provide significant savings to both our patients and Medicare while providing proven top-quality service."
Now in its eighth year, The Cataract Eye Center of Cleveland offers total eye care, from routine exams to the latest treatment for glaucoma and
cataracts. For cataract surgeries, Salamon and Louis specialize in a small incision surgical procedure called "phacoemulsification," using ultrasound. Resumption of normal activities, and full healing of the eye, are achieved much faster than with older techniques.
