THE CALL OF THE COYOTE.The coyote is best known for its distinctive call. This Northern and Central American cousin to the dog marks its territory by filling the night air with an eerie wail. Coyotes often travel with a group of other coyotes called a pack. Once one coyote raises its voice, its comrades are certain to join in. Humans can hear their howl as far as ten miles away. The coyote has large ears that allow it to hear faraway sounds and sounds that are very faint--like the quiet squeaking of a mouse. Coyotes also have good eyesight and a keen sense of smell. These traits make the coyote an excellent hunter. Mice, birds, squirrels, and rabbits are no match for the coyote. The coyote may team up with other coyotes to catch larger animals like antelope, deer, and elk. The coyote is not a picky eater--if it comes across a dead animal, it will enjoy this easy meal. The coyote also eats fruits, grass, and insects, especially if meat is scarce. |
